Nutrient Removal

The requirement for modern wastewater treatment system is not only able to remove BOD in raw wastewater, but also it should be able to destroy excess nutrient (ammoniacal nitrogen and phosphorus) to a very low level which is particularly important for sensitive water catchment.

The problems related to removing ammoniacal nitrogen in sewage was researched for 2 years at full scale trial where PMT with UPM and Indah Water Konsortium had successfully completed a MOSTI Technofund project (RM1.9 million). The STP site at Taman Desa Mewah with a capacity of 5000 PE was upgraded with the latest BioFil AE system.

BioFil-AE system employs the latest innovation in sewage treatment, by incorporating the biological nutrient removal stage. The configuration consists of four reaction tanks, utilizing anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic-aerobic process. The primary aim is to remove BOD and ammonia nitrogen to very low level which is the requirement of today’s environmental protection to combat river pollution and also protect the coastal water.

BioFil system operates with a total 12 hrs retention time. The typical process is shown.
